這首歌最初是由一位法國歌手Jacques Brel創作，歌曲的原名是"Le Moribond"(臨終的人)，發表於1961年。
這是一個令人惋惜的真實故事。一名囚犯在接到執行電刑的死刑書後，在監獄裡寫下了一段遺言。
　　在生命的盡頭，他回憶著過往的美好歲月。他是一名司機，原本有著一個美滿幸福的家庭。有一個美麗的妻子，和一個可愛的女兒，還有一個從小一起長大的好朋友。他努力工作，賺錢養家，享受著平凡日子裡的幸福。然而，有一天，他偶然發現了妻子與最好的朋友早已暗生情愫。世界，在那一瞬間崩潰。他曾經的幸福美滿，良友、愛妻，還有可愛的女兒，一切的一切，在那個冬天結束了。他傻了，瘋了，舉起了手中的槍......之後，開車徑直到警察局主動自首。兩條人命，換來一個死刑。行刑前3天，他得到了一張白紙，用來書寫最後的遺言。於是，就有了這首《Seasons in the Sun》。
　　 1963年的冬季，美國的天氣冷得徹骨。來美國樂壇闖蕩的加拿大男孩Terry Jacks，坐在沒有暖氣的屋子裡，喝著白蘭地，耳邊放著法國歌手Jacques Brel的《Lemoribond》。來美國也不少日子了，但卻沒有音樂人對他的音樂感興趣。他看著剛剛朋友塞給他的一張名片，背後抄錄了一個死刑犯的臨終遺言。聽著《Lemoribond》，看著名片背後的字，他拿起了吉他開始輕輕彈唱…… 很快，Terry Jacks將這首歌重新灌唱，可是完工之後，Terry Jacks在書架上存放了一年，無人問津。正好有一天，他把帶子放出來聽，一位年輕的送報生來到他家，聽到了這首歌，特別欣賞。直到幾年之後，在全美排行榜獲得了三週冠軍，又因為柯達的廣告，而在台灣造成了瘋狂的流行。然而，時過境遷，只可惜主唱人Terry Jacks，早已在歌壇消失了。
　　後來，這首歌又由西城男孩（Westlife）重新翻唱，再次把這首歌推廣到了頂峰。
